Online Driving Classes

Web courses aim at creating safer drivers
America's favorite car club has joined the ranks of organizations offering online driving classes. AAA Auto Clubs South, with a branch in Melbourne, provides Web-based courses to help drivers young and old.
"This is new for us, but there was a demand for it," said Yoli Buss, director of driver improvement for AAA Auto Clubs South. "It's very convenient for working people, especially the courses for older drivers."
The three courses address the needs of neophyte, older and not-so-good drivers.
The First Time Driver course is required for beginner drivers, who need to take two exams -- Drug Alcohol Traffic Awareness and Temporary Driving Permit Exam -- mandated by Florida law in order to receive that coveted temporary driver's permit.
"First-time drivers are usually teens with school and after-school activities," said Buss. "They can take both exams online and save time."
But don't think they can hit the road after this online course. The course only entitles them to a learning permit. That means they can get some practice behind the wheel as long as a licensed adult is with them.
A first-time driver must go to the Department of Motor Vehicles to pass written and driving tests before getting a license.
For drivers 55 and older who want to hone up skills and save a few dollars, AAA's Florida Mature Driver Program, offers a 5 percent reduction on a portion of auto insurance premiums after successfully completing the six-hour motor vehicle accident prevention course.
Get nailed for speeding or missing a stop sign?
The Four-Hour Basic Driver Improvement course, aimed at drivers who have received a ticket for a civil penalty, may be for you.
By completing the course, students are eligible for an 18 percent fine reduction, no points on their record for the violation and the maintenance of safe driver status. Fewer points on your driving record can mean lower insurance premiums.
AAA contracts with the American Safety Council to administer the online courses.
Although both members and non-members can register for the online offerings, members get discounted rates.
"There has been a very good response about the courses," said Mary Tysenn, Safety and Traffic Coordinator for AAA's Brevard County branch in Melbourne. "Our members ask about them almost on a daily basis."
The Central Florida Safety Council and other vendors have offered similar online courses for years. But Buss expects AAA's reputation to lead more drivers to its Internet classes.
"People know we give them a good product that's been researched and that's at a fair price," she said.
